Woman steals body parts from mortician: what she does afterwards causes horror

Arkansas (USA) - Their dead bodies were supposed to be used for research purposes, but instead parts of deceased people ended up in packages at the post office. Responsible for this: a 37-year-old American woman.

Candace Chapman Scott worked as an employee at a mortician's, but her salary was apparently not enough to live on. So Scott decided to cash in another way.

According to the public prosecutor's office in the US state of Arkansas, the 37-year-old was hanging around in a Facebook group where people were openly discussing the trade in body parts.

At some point, Chapman Scott sensed her chance for a side income and joined the group as a saleswoman. Then she met Jeremy Lee Pauley, a man she did not know. A strong business relationship was to develop between the two.

According to the public prosecutor's office, the US-American woman sent her customer a total of 24 boxes filled with human remains between October 2021 and July 2022. In return, Pauley transferred the equivalent of around 10,000 euros to her.

Body parts should actually be used by the university for research

Chapman Scott stole a skull, brains, an arm, an ear, lungs, hearts, breasts, a belly button, a testicle and several stillborn children from her employer.

Particularly perfidious: the 37-year-old admitted that the parents of the foetuses she sold were not given the ashes of their dead children, but of other people's corpses.

"This was a truly despicable crime," said a senior FBI agent in court. The human remains were actually intended to be used as research objects by the Medical University of Arkansas.

Chapman Scott was sentenced to 15 years in prison for her sideline last Thursday and must pay back the approximately 10,000 euros she collected. According to the Arkansas Democrat Gazette, her client Jeremy Lee Pauley is still at large. But he too is to be tried.
